Cape Coral Power Squadron

 Member Assistance Program

In the past, insurance restrictions have prevented Squadrons from providing on-the-water training or assistance despite the fact that many members, old and new, have specifically asked for it. These restrictions have been lifted and now we can and do offer on-board member assistance to our members.

What is it? It’s a program intended to help members of the Cape Coral Power Squadron get the most out of their squadron membership. Some of the things we can assist you with are:

Having trouble getting your boat to behave the way it should? Single screw, Twin Screw, Inboard/Outboard, Outboard or Sail, Experienced boat operators in our Squadron will accompany you on your boat and demonstrate how to handle your boat under a variety of  conditions.

Would you like someone to help you become familiar with the waters in the Cape Coral area? Somebody can lead you through your canals to the river or sound and guide you through the channels of the Caloosahatchee and Pine Island Sound.

Thinking of updating or replacing electronics. We can help in reaching the best electronics solutions for your boat, based on funds available, cruising goals and space available.

Want to use your GPS as more than a simple tool. Help is available to show you how to program your unit and use it to full advantage.

Radar can be used  as much more than a collision avoidance device. We can show you how to use your radar as a navigation device as well.

VHF radios are now equipped for Digital Selective Calling (DSC), but to use this life-saving feature your radio must be registered with the Coast Guard. In registering, you will be assigned an identification number. The Squadron can help in setting up your radio with that MMSI number.

Want advice on buying a boat? … we’ll find someone to help you (someone who isn’t a boat salesman), but can evaluate your needs and point you in the right direction.

Interested in getting involved in the Cape Coral Power Squadron’s Education Department? We can put you in contact with someone who can help you.

Questions about the squadron and/or its organization? What do the letters before and after a member's name mean? What is the significance of insignia and squadron flags? We can put you in touch with the right person who can enlighten you on the workings of the CCPS and the National organization.

These are some of the items that we can help you with. Whether you’re a sailor or a power boater we’ll get someone who’ll go out with you on your boat (preferably) or theirs.

There are a lot of things not mentioned above that members can do, such as: do you like to play cards … go shelling … play tiddlywinks … any other ideas?

If we can help you with any of the above contact Tom Hale at wcrosebud@aol.com or Mike Woodward at mlwoodward@embarqmail.com by clicking on their email address.

For members with expertise -- The purpose of the Member Assistance Program is to help our members enjoy the Cape Coral Power Squadron. BUT, in order to make it work YOU need to help.  If you would like to volunteer your expertise … please feel free … contact Tom or Mike. Remember this is a volunteer organization, if you don’t volunteer your services it won’t work. In all honesty Mike and Tom are not the fount of all knowledge. They need all the help they can get. If they’re as lonely as our Port Captain, Joe Grippe, this program will have failed.
